From this Uddyan the clarion call for independence of Bangladesh was given by Father of Nation Bangabandhhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 7 March 1971, and curiously enough it is again here that the commander of the Pakistan occupation forces surrendered on 16 December 1971.
